About Our School
Established in July 1908, Abeokuta Grammar School (AGS) is the first secondary school in the old western region and the sixth in the whole of Nigeria. In her 100 years of existence, Abeokuta Grammar School popularly referred to as Abeograms has produced numerous outstanding scholars. Vanguards includes Rev. I. O. Ransome Kuti (accomplished educationist), Josiah Olutunji Majekodunmi (the first Nigerian medallist in an international sports), Justice Olumuyiwa Jibowu (1st Nigeria Puisne Judge); musical legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Prof. Hezekiah Oluwasanmi (V.C University of Ife - now O.A.U Ile-Ife), Funmilayo Ransome Kuti (the doyen of female rights in Nigeria), Oba Oyebade Lipede I (Alake of Egbaland) all of late memory. Others include Senator David Dafinone, Olisa Chukura (SAN), Gen. Al-Ameen Dagash, Ambassador G.O. Ijiwere,Oba (Dr) Adedapo Tejuoso (Osile of Oke Ona), Kasimawo Laloko, Chief Olatunbosun Lampejo and Tunde Kelani to mention just a few.
Abeokuta Grammar School can aptly be described as the first national school in Nigeria. From inception, it has opened its doors to any with a thirst for learning without discrimination of any sort, be it religious, sex, ethnic or racial. Its roll call of over 30,000 students features names from the six geopolitical zone (the main divisions of the country). There are also those of numerous students from the West Coast of Africa and beyond. It has been a Unity School from time with emphasis that you are your brothers' Keeper, respect for seniority and respect for age - attributes for Nigerian culture and family union.
